The work alludes to the use of the word “wave” in German media, such as “migrant tsunami” and “migrant wave”, used to intimidate the public. The film suggests the flow of migration as a natural part of human existence by comparing it to the movement and circulation of waves that have always been everywhere.

Adapted from Eduard von Keyserling’s 1911 novel of the same title, Waves depicts both the lives and loves of an aristocratic German family during a summer holiday on the Baltic coast of what is now Lithuania, as well as the twilight of a social order and its mores in a world soon to be plunged into the cataclysm of world war.

Waves is inspired by a short novel of Robert Louis Stevenson, The Ebb-tide, written and published in 1894, the year of his untimely death (Stevenson was 44 years old).

After experiencing a terrible tragedy, the hero leaves his former life. Everything that seemed important goes into the past — work, success, the usual rhythms of a big city. But the world of people refuses to let him go, bursts into his chosen solitude, beckons with new opportunities. Unexpectedly for himself, the hero finds a new home, where he seems to find peace, love and answers to his painful questions. But are these the right answers? And what price will you have to pay to survive and remain yourself?

A young Black man grapples with his toxic cycle, his day unfolding through a visual poem set to a tape cassette that weaves the rhythm of his struggles, echoing his journey toward self-awareness and change.

A woman lives a lonely life in London, oppressed by the chaotic life of the big city. She dresses in antique retro garments and seems out of time and space. John Taylor, friend and colleague of Carey, had originally worked on Man of Aran and filmed some of the additional photography in Waves.

In 1985, an ancient evil began slaughtering the senior class in alphabetical order - but it was stopped. Two years later the evil has resurfaced, and 20 year old Jake Davis hunts down Zeke Zanderfeldt - a reclusive former classmate who put an end to the evil previously - to find a pattern to take down the evil again. Along with former high school theater queen Julia Lochley (who also practices in the dark arts), the trio band together against the demonic force that is claiming young lives each day.
